What is MODY?
MODY stands for maturity-onset diabetes of the young.
MODY encompasses multiple genetic subtypes of monogenic diabetes and may recur across generations within the same family.Parents, siblings and children may appear to have different diagnoses while sharing the same underlying genetic cause.
It can resemble type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Age, body habitus or a single test may reveal hyperglycaemia without identifying its cause.

Hyperglycaemia first appeared in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood.
A parent, sibling or relatives across successive generations have a similar history.
Islet-autoantibody results, C-peptide, body habitus, clinical course or treatment response are not fully consistent with the current classification.
Persistent mild fasting hyperglycaemia during pregnancy, or a similar pattern in relatives.

Professor Limei Liu has traced disease-causing variants in Chinese families with diabetes and translated original discoveries into genetic diagnosis, accurate subtyping and specialist clinical care. Her work investigates why diabetes develops and helps determine which form of diabetes a patient actually has.
MODY is the field in which she has made her most distinctive contributions. Her broader clinical and research work spans other specific forms of diabetes, differentiating type 1 from type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, obesity, inherited metabolic disorders and complications of diabetes.

The team investigated a NEUROD1 variant in a Chinese family with suspected MODY, adding family-based evidence on the genetic mechanisms of early-onset diabetes.

Yes. Management can differ substantially by MODY subtype. Outside pregnancy, glucose-lowering medication is often unnecessary in confirmed GCK-MODY, although coexisting insulin resistance or another indication can change management. Any treatment change requires a confirmed diagnosis and specialist review; do not stop current treatment on your own.
